Placing Highlight So It Enhances Rather Than Overwhelms

Step 1: Identify where light naturally reflects on your face. Before applying any highlight, look at your face in good light and find the areas that already catch it: the tops of the cheekbones, the brow bone just beneath the highest point of the arch, the inner corners of the eyes, and the center of the upper lip. These are the zones where a reflective product enhances what is already happening. Placing highlight anywhere outside these points, on the full lid, across the entire forehead, or down the full length of the nose, is what pushes a glow into overdone territory.

The 974 Tapered Powder Brush is designed specifically for cheek and temple placement. Its tapered shape concentrates product on the high points of the cheekbone rather than spreading it across the full cheek. Load lightly, tap off the excess, and place the tip of the brush directly on the top of the cheekbone. The taper does the targeting work so the highlight sits where the bone catches light rather than bleeding into the surrounding area.

Step 2: Apply in thin layers and assess between each one. Highlight builds faster than almost any other product. One pass with a loaded brush on a shimmer shade can already be more than enough. The most common mistake is applying a second layer before stepping back and checking the first. A second layer is only necessary if the first barely registers when you step into daylight.

Use the 925 Duo Fiber Fan for initial application. Its flat fan shape and duo fiber bristles pick up significantly less product per stroke than a standard brush, which makes it nearly impossible to over-apply on the first pass. Sweep it lightly across the cheekbone zone in a single outward motion. The duo fiber construction deposits a sheer, buildable layer that lets you assess the result before committing to more.

Step 3: Blend the edges so highlight transitions into the skin. A sharp edge where highlight meets foundation is what makes the product look placed rather than glowing. After application, soften the perimeter of the highlighted area with a clean brush so the shimmer fades gradually into the surrounding skin. The center stays bright. The border disappears.

The 990 Angled Face Brush handles this step cleanly. Its wide, flat angled head whisks lightly over the skin surface without pressing into or lifting the product underneath. Run it just outside the highlighted zone in a single outward sweep to diffuse the edge. The angle of the bristles reaches the subtle contours around the cheekbone without disturbing what is already placed on top of it.

Why It Works: Highlight works by amplifying what light is already doing on the face. When it is placed on areas that naturally catch it, it enhances a reflection that already exists. When it is placed too broadly or too heavily, it starts drawing attention to the product itself rather than enhancing the skin, and that is what reads as overdone. Thin application, precise placement, and a softened edge are what keep highlight looking like skin rather than product. The three brushes work in sequence: the 974 targets the placement zone precisely, the 925 deposits product at a controlled intensity, and the 990 removes the visible border so the result looks like it belongs there.
